We had a cabin just two doors down from Dorothy and Al and every Friday in the Spring and Fall, we would arrive around 7pm. Fifteen minutes later, the phone would ring.
"Hi It's Dorothy. Hand and Foot Canasta here at 8:30. See you!" At 8:30, we would knock on their door, our refreshments in hand, to be greeted by a cheery "Come on in !!" We played cards until midnight and after much laughter and fun, to say nothing of food, we'd head for home! What a great way to start the week-end! We often had a fire Saturday evening and I will never forget the Poodle, Fluffy (I think) She loved beer and if you left your beer bottle beside your lawnchair, she would sneak over to it, knock it down and proceed to roll on her back with your bottle in her front paws and she'd gulp down a few glugs, before Dorothy would catch her and scold her. My son Paul thought that Fluffy was hilarious and he encouraged her. Dorothy scolded him too and said.
"If you want to give her beer, you have take her home. She loves beer, but in a few hours, she will be sick. You can clean up after her! "
Paul immediately stopped encouraging her!
In 1988, we moved over to the Lake, but we always met Dorothy and Al on Saturday afternoon at the Legion in Rainy River, where we caught up with news and neighbours. We also solved the problems of the world. Every New Years Eve, Enar and I would pack a bag and head over to Dorothy and Al's spacious cabin to celebrate the New Year. Dorothy loved to have people to her house and she was the Queen of Hospitality! She always cooked a sumptious meal for supper, and after we had cleaned up, the cards came out. We snacked, laughed, told stories and at Twelve o'clock, we greeted the NewYear, and then settled down for the night! Next morning, Doroth cooked us all a hearty breakfast, and sent us on our way. What a wonderful woman she was! Dorothy loved to entertain her friends, and did it with Gusto!
Her laugh was infectious and we always had fun. What a wonderful woman!! What a shame that she's gone! I will remember her with great affection.
I am so sorry that I cannot join you all on Friday. Some appointments are impossible to cancel.
I will be thinking of you all at that time. So to you, Colleen and Dave, Michael and Cynthia, Ken and Bev, and the Grands and Great-Grands, my sincere sympathy.
Since Enar loved Dorothy's cooking, I'm thinking that he and Dorothy are playing cards, and she is getting a meal ready for him.
Love Carol
