All About Mary

Mary Hogan definitely was not a shy person. She was an amazing story teller who was never at a loss for words. She also was not reticent to voice her opinion or stand up for herself. A favorite story of hers was when, as a young girl, she got a job at the local drug store. When she told grandma the good news, the conversation went something like this: "Mom guess what? I got a job at the drug store." "Oh Mary, be careful," says grandma. "Don't worry about me ma," says Mary, "I'll be fine." "It's not you I'm worried about Mary, it's the pharmacist. You've got a big mouth!" Mary loved that story and so did I because it was just so her. Here's another story Mary told me. I can't recall the circumstances but one day she's looking out the window and there she sees my dad and Red driving up her driveway. "Oh Bruce," she says, "Red and Cec are here." Upon hearing these words, Bruce gets up immediately, sneaks out the back door, and goes to the beer store." All you Hogans out there know why. Finally, my dad told me that once Mary had a job and he didn't think she was being treated fairly. So one day he barges into the store she was working at, takes her by the hand and says, "Come on Mary, I got a better job for you" and away they went. I give this story because the Hogans, although they did have their differences, were a very close knit family who never hesitated to stick up for each other. My final memory of Mary was at Noel's wedding. Her and Jigs were sitting in the back of Gary's antique car like 2 peas in a pod. And there they sat for quite a while, 2 members of the Great Generation, no doubt solving the problems of the world.
