George was Postmaster of Eastpoint, Florida for 30 years. I followed him in 1992 until 2004. He was a hard act to follow. Because George knew every man, woman and child in Eastpoint, he could easily sort the mail, no matter how it was addressed. I had not been there very long when the Saturday before Mother's Day arrived, and with it many card for the Mothers and Grandmothers. As I struggled to look up names in the card file, I wished that I could implant all of George's memories into my brain so that I would know how to deliver the cards. I was determined that no cards would be returned. George was so beloved in the town that many had difficulty accepting this 33 year old woman from the big city. George, being the gentleman that he was, did not hang out at the post office or try to tell me how to do my job. At first, I thought that maybe he didn't like me. But, that wasn't the case. I met his wife, mother, and children and each one of them found a time to tell me that George thought I was doing a great job. This made me feel good, and before too long, I was fitting into the community. One time when the flu was rampaging all of my employees, I had been out delivering mail on St. George Island and he met me out in the parking lot. We had a nice talk and he offered to come the next day and help deliver mail if I needed him. I laughed and said if one more person called in sick that I would take him up on his offer. George will be sorely missed in Eastpoint, but I feel certain that God has him up there in Heaven delivering good wishes to all of the angels.
I was very sad to hear of George's passing, and want his family to know how much he will be missed.
