road trip

One thing that my sister and I always did with grandpa was go on long road trips.  Usually Grandma and Grandpa would drive down to visit us either in the Bay Area or in Southern California and we would drive back up to Oregon with them.  One trip always comes to mind.  After I graduated middle school I flew out to Minneapolis and met him and spent time with Ken and Ann.  We then drove from Minneapolis to Seattle to Portland and then back to Southern California.  We spent 4th of July in the Twin Cities and then hit the road.  All across South Dakota I kept seeing fireworks stores. Not firework stands but big firework stores.  I kept asking Grandpa to stop and he kept saying no.  Finally we stopped for gas and next to the gas station there was a fireworks store and I went in to buy as much as I could.  I spent like 50 bucks on fireworks and was over the moon.  After I had bought the fireworks and the cashier had given them to me he informed me that, "you know its only legal to shoot off fireworks in South Dakota 4 days before and after the 4th of July and that it was July 9th and therefore illegal."  I had disappointed disguted look on my face because all sales were final but there was grandpa next to me laughing.  I had to then wait after driving like 600 more miles until we were in Montana after visiting Yellowstone to be able to light them off.  And, now everytime we drove past either a sign for a fireworks store or an actual fireworks store he would say, "hey, you want to go buy more fireworks that are illegal for you to shoot off."  He never let it go.  Little did he know I would get him back.  On the trip he said when he booked all the hotels he booked hotels with pools because he knows that i love to swim.  Well when we checked in to our hotel in Rapid City, SD when we were going to Mt. Rushmore our hotel did not have a pool.  I never let it go especially when he would make a comment about fireworks.  Well I won the last battle.  That hotel in Rapid City's neighbor was a hotel had an indoor pool with a water slide.  So I would sneak in to that hotel to use their pool.  He said it couldn't be done but I was 13 and a teenager with a grudge.  I then returned soaking wet and he looked at me and said, "I never doubted your chances."
