Golfing

One thing Grandpa and I always did was go golfing.  He got me my first set of clubs and when I would grow out of them he would always buy me a new set.  He even then bought me a set to have in Oregon because he would refuse to pay the airlines to check my clubs when I would fly up instead of drive.  Two stores come to mind when I think of Grandpa.  First, this is the story of how it all started.  Grandpa took me with him when he went golfing with Don Roberts,  I was just going to sit in the cart while they played and told me to keep a low profile when we were by the clubhouse or if we saw a course ranger because I wasn't supposed to be on the course with them because he would have to pay for me to play.  I think I was like 11 or 12 at the time and he hadn't gotten me my first set of clubs yet.  Well we made it to like the 7th or 8th hole before the course ranger caught on and confronted him and made him pay for me to be on the course.  Well Grandpa paid and then at the next hole he gave me a club and a ball and said, "Well if I have to pay for you to be here you might as well start golfing."  Thats how it all began.  The other story that comes to mind is when we were up in Seattle visiting Phil and Susanne and Grandpa, Phil, Drew, and I went golfing.  Well I think we were on the 4th or 5th hole and his ball was farther ahead of mine and way off to the side.  He went to his ball and told me to play and I said well you may want to come back here so he wouldn't get hit.  He then said there was no way or chance that I would hit him.  So I took a swing and then the ball veered off and nailed him in the back.  Phil, Andrew, & I all gasped and raced over to him thinking the worst had happened.  When we got to him expecting him to be wincing in pain and screaming profanities he was there laughing and said, "Mike I never ever should under estimate your golfing skills."  We all had a long laugh and we both never forgot it.  He also would use it against me.
