Obituary for Dr. Martin Vanacour

Dr. Martin Vanacour, preferably known as Papa, passed away on September 11, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. Martin is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Joyce Vanacour, his daughter Barbara (Mike) Fisher, son Jason (Heather) Vanacour, and his 5 grandchildren that meant everything to him: Matthew, Lauren, and Emma Fisher, and Johanna and Mari Vanacour, brother-in-law Allen (Joan) Garr, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Boris & Martha Vanacour and his sister Sandra Cohn. Martin was born in 1942 in Brooklyn, NY. His father Boris was killed in action in WW2. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a Bachelor's in Public Administration and went on to get his Master's degree at NYU and his PhD from Arizona State University. He served the City of Glendale for more than 30 years, including serving as City Manager for more than 15 years. He was also a professor and taught at Arizona State University and the University of Phoenix. Martin loved learning and teaching, but he was most proud of being a Papa to his grandkids. A funeral service to celebrate his life is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on September 13th at Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix, AZ 85009. The family will be sitting shiva at the Vanacour family home. Donations in his memory can be made to the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center Barrow Neurological Foundation, or Marvin Andrews Fellowship Program. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.
